Edward's Note
[The letter is written in a clear, elegant hand that anyone who has tried to cheat off of Edward or spent much time looking at his writing is gonna recognize. It's slightly old fashioned, perhaps, but then, there was an art to penmanship once that has been discarded as time has marched forward, and Edward was taught that art so very, very long ago.]
To those it may concern, especially those who still consider me any kind of friend:
To begin, there is a debt that I must discharge. To all those who played a part in the discovery of my guilt in this matter:
Thank you. Sincerely.
I will admit that I don't know the specifics of what my punishment will be, though I assume there will be in it some measure of horror, based on what was done to Reika last week. Whatever it was, allow me to assure you that it is what I wanted. The alternative was utterly unacceptable. Whatever was done to me: I earned my gruesome end.
I have told several of you previously not to watch, even if I could not shield you, and I hope you heeded the advice. No child should have to witness what occurs inside these walls. Some of it is unavoidable. To watch another person die is not. Do what you can to shield yourselves; I understand it cannot be as much as it should be.
Sonic, Dylan: I gave you as much truth as I could. None of what I taught you earlier today was a lie. Try to remember it, and help each other if you can, if you should need to use anything that I taught you again. I hope that you will not, though it may seem hypocritical of me.
Anya: I am so sorry to have disappointed you like this. Hopefully no one still there will show that they were as weak as I, and no one else need be hurt.
Dewey: Please continue taking care of her. I have seen the way you guard others. I believe I have your keytaur, you can find it in my room. I hope you learn to play everything you wish to.
Carrie: I wish I could have been what, I believe, you thought I was. I am sorry for disappointing you as well. You are strong enough to survive this.
Valmont: We talked briefly about the weight of a human life, and the price that is paid by those who would lift their hand and take it from another. Again, I will understand if my words are seen only as hypocritical, but please believe me when I tell you that I was not lying. One may not kill another and escape the weight that it will carry, and one may not associate with murderers without it staining them. By now you will know that I have the experience to speak on this topic. I have been a monster. I tried to be better, knowing it was impossible, but I believe even the attempt is worthwhile.
Adorabat: I am sorry for violating the law that you hold in such esteem. I saw no other options that were more palatable left, however, and shall accept the consequences of my actions, and my choice.
Yasu: You were right about me all along. I'm sorry; I hope you survive the rest of this.
I do not know all of you so well as I would wish to, and now there is no more time. Try to stay strong, and try to stay sane. I hope you are all able to escape, and that the administration of this facility can be made to pay for their crimes.
I won't ask forgiveness. What I did was unforgivable. All that I can say, as was said long ago, is that with a lever long enough, a single man might move the world, and the proper leverage was applied to me. I could not let him take Bella, to torture or kill, and so I made my decision. I tried to be humane in the commission of my crime, so far as was possible. It does not assuage my guilt, of course, but there was no reason for Thomasin to suffer, and I did not prolong her death.
